Today I was in an accident…

22 November, 2009

Yep.  I was hit by a car.  The really bad thing is that it wasn’t just me.  It was me and the  kids.  We were riding to church.  I had just come out of a bike lane and had taken the lane to go through an intersection.  The car hit us from behind.  The box on the Bakfiets is pretty much destroyed.  We’re all okay.  I have a bit of road rash, and the kids have a bump or two, but overall, we aren’t too bad off.  I’ll post details as I get them, but the initial report is that the person, who is somewhat elderly ,may have had a medical condition at the time of or as a result of the accident.  More to come I’m sure.  All is well.

Oh no. Brad I’m so sorry to hear about that. Let me know if there is anything we can do to help. What did the driver say for an excuse?

I didn’t say. The really difficult thing about this experience is that we know the person who hit us, and you won’t find a kinder person anywhere. I have no idea what happened, but as is typical, “I didn’t see you” was uttered. In this case, it may well be true, though I did everything right so there was no reason to believe I wouldn’t have been seen. It is tragic more for them than for us. I’m just so very thankful that my kids are both okay. This was another in a long line of “teddy bear” experiences for them(they’ve been to too many hospitals, emergency rooms, and ambulances in their short lives). Their biggest concern was that the Bakfiets is broken and they won’t be able to ride in it anymore! What great kids I have! Thanks for your concern Todd!
