Bike Planning Charrette – January 19th!
2 December, 2009

The first public meeting for the Orem Bicycle & Pedestrian Study will be January 19th at 7:00 pm. It will be at the Orem Senior Friendship Center, located at 400 East & Center Street in Orem. If you want to make a difference for cycling in Orem, put it on your calender and plan to be there. It should be a good experience, and it will make a big difference.

Orem continues to be a great place to live. We have a wonderful opportunity to improve on our current public commitment to the safety of cycling in our community.
As a member of the community and a daily biking commuter, even in the winter, I see a great need to increase safety and access to cycling in Orem in the winter as well as summer.
I have to use State Street in the winter as it is the only reliably maintained road during winter storms. I still have to use the right traffic lane instead of the parking lane, making is a much higher risk for me and the cars.
I would use 800 West and the current bike route down the University Parkway diagonal, using the pedestrian walk and bike way if it was cleared early in the morning.
I wish we could place the same priority on maintaining some main biking route as we have done on the roadways.
I recognize I am a minority, but if we make biking safety and access a priority, I believe more would participate in this healthy, green, cost effective and rewarding way to commute.

I agree with David. I ride almost everyday, too, except when the snow is too deep because of the danger of riding in the street rather than the parking lane. At 1600 North and State street you don’t dare ride in the street at that intersection or the one just east of State on 1600 North. You are forced to the sidewalks which are never cleared. I have to ride over to Main street, then to 400 North, head west to 800 W. then south to UVU. I feel safer because the traffic is less.
The bike lane on 400 North from State to 800 West is nice and the city did push the snow away from the lane so I could ride early on after a snow. 400 North and State street intersection feels safer to because the traffic is less than 1600. There are times I would like to ride to the BYU area but not until the snow melts since it is never cleared. What would it take to have that done?
Orem is a great place to live and commute. You really can get most places in the Orem area and surrounding communities with a bike without too much trouble or major hills. The possibilities are many.
