Orem City Council Vote!

4 November, 2010

The Orem Bike & Pedestrian Master Plan is scheduled to be voted on this coming Tuesday, November 9th. The meeting gets under way at 5:30. I will update everyone with the agenda for the evening as soon as I have it, which should be any day. PLEASE come if at all possible. There is no known opposition, and the council is very much in favor, but the more people we have there the more they will be convinced that it is a good thing to do for our city. See you there!

Nothing to Say?

17 September, 2010

I am something of a lone ranger here, so sorry for the lack of posts over the past two weeks. I have been thinking of things to write about, but I haven’t come up with anything. I know of things coming up that I will write about soon. For now, please, be patient with me. I am conscious of you, my two or three readers. Hang on there. More is coming soon, I promise!

Quick Question

1 September, 2010

Someone told me that they thought the design of this blog was boring.  Now, I am kind of a minimalist, and I suppose that is the designer in me coming through.  But I want to know what you think.  Should I change the theme, the look?  Dark, earthy, light, bright?  If all one or two of you who read would let me know what you think, I would appreciate it.  While I write this to sometimes inform and to share what I think and really don’t expect that anyone will read it, I know that there are at least a few who do, so speak up.  I want your thoughts.  Next time will be about bikes.  I promise.  Thanks.

A long long day

15 June, 2010

Today was a long day, as I said already.  I left for SLC this morning at 10 for a Utah Bicycle Coalition meeting.  I got home at 4:15.  I then left at 4:30 to attend a Orem City Transportation Commission meeting.  Bikes bikes and more bikes.  It was a good day really, and tomorrow is more of the same.   I have a meeting with UDOT’s CORE team.  They are the folks rebuilding I-15 in Utah County.  Orem City’s bike plan is really making some great progress, and I hope to have some things to post soon.  The plan looks great so far, and with a few tweaks, it will be awesome.  Be back soon.

Some Help?

24 August, 2009

We here at BikeUV.org are seeing an increase in the need for more and better bicycle advocacy here in Utah Valley.  If you would like to see this and are someone with professional skills in the areas of Law or Accounting, I would like to hear from you.  There may or may not be anything that results from this, but some exploratory help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Brad

I’m Back

23 April, 2009

Hello all!  I have been asked by several where I have been and what has been going on.  I have been very busy, and very tired.  I’ve had plenty of Bike News to write about, but I haven’t had the time or the energy to do so in the recent past.  That is about to rectified, I hope.  So, here is an update on what has been going on.  First, the Share the Road license plate bill, SB102, was signed by the Governor!  That means that come October, those of us who have cars and ride a bike can all put our feelings about who owns the road on the back of our cars.   Proceeds will go first to buy more plates, and second, to fund advocacy and educational efforts by the Utah Bicycle Coalition.  This promises to be a very small amount, but whatever comes in will help.  Next, I went to Washington DC this spring for the National Bike Summit.  What a great trip that was for me.  I was able to visit with at least one person in the office of each member of the Utah Congressional Delegation.  All were attentive, and at least outwardly supportive.  I hope that I can build a good relationship with these people so that they can see the good that bicycles can do.  Next, my employer, Mad Dog Cycles, was declared a Silver level Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists!  I know, you are thinking that since it is a bike shop we should be bike friendly.  It isn’t that easy.  I can help any of you work on that designation if you want help.  Also, I can help you help the city or town you live in become a Bicycle Friendly Community.  Just ask!  Last, but not least, May is Bike Month!  Events are happening all month.  UTA is holding their annual event in Provo on the 12th, and many other events should be happening.  If you want your business to be able to win an award, UTA hosts the commuter challenge each may.  Click here for details.  It promises to be the best Bike Month Utah Valley has every seen!  Look for more posts, more regularly.  I will tell you though, it will be the middle of next week before I post again.  I have some serious yard work to do.

Taxes by the Mile

Nothing makes me want to jump on a bike faster than reading the following story. This could be another big boost for the bike industry.

Winter Riding

10 January, 2009

I’m sure that not to many of you are out riding right now.  That is to bad.  I know, those people out riding in the snow and the cold are crazy, right?  Well, if so, I’m crazy.  Yep, I’m the guy holding up traffic  while  I ride in the middle of the lane.  Sorry for the inconvenience.  I’ll be out of your way soon.  Yes, those studded tires really do work on ice.  Bikes do in fact work better in the snow than cars do.  No, I don’t recommend century rides this time of year, but a trip to the store or to church isn’t at all out of the question.  Just bundle up and go slow.  You’ll be out enjoying the freedom of two wheels again.  Enjoy it.  My favorite memories while riding include a very early morning with three inches of snow on the ground, snow still falling, and no traffic.  It was beautiful and oh so peaceful.  Enjoy the winter.  It soon gives way to spring.

Nothing

27 October, 2008

I can’t think of anything.  I rode to work, and home for lunch.  Then it was back to work, and then back home.  That was it.  Nothing else happened and I have no real ideas.  I thought you would like to know that I am still here, and still thinking about what to write.  Today, there is just nothing.  Tomorrow, I’m hoping to go to the Orem City Council meeting and ask about a road that was re-striped without public input.  That should be interesting.  I’ll let you know if I do go, and if it is interesting.  For now, good night.
